Several months after drawing my first Azulejo inspired Angel, I decided I wanted to return to that theme and color scheme with another design, this time something a little more figurative! I’ve had this character design of a Sphinx or manticore-like creature in mind for a while, and wanted to do something similar. I kept the blue and gold color scheme, and some rotational symmetry, but with a little more emphasis on defining shapes than before.
I used to not really like square canvases as much, but I think doing these tile projects has really made me more appreciative of how they can look, especially for more decorative and symmetrical pieces like this. I’m hesitant to commit, since consistent series have proven a challenge in the past, but it would be nice to make a series of things in this color scheme, and with a pattern/decorative focus. Like tiles, they might look good together.
