Some more King Philip II Augustus (Philippe Auguste) doodles, some of my favorites I’ve made over the past year. I wanted to draw my impression of him as a child, young teen, and as an adult man, since I think there’s a lot of both room for creative liberties and getting funky with it.
The last image is based on the description by Pain Gatineau as “a well-knit, handsome man, bald (from his illness at Acre), of agreeable face and ruddy complexion, loving good cheer, wine and women. Generous to his friends, he was miserly to those who displeased him; very skilled in the art of the engineer, catholic in his faith, far-seeing, obstinate in his resolution. His judgment was sound and quick. He was also quick in his anger, but easily appeased.” (source)
Source is kind of hm I can’t find the quote anywhere else but also I don’t know French so who knows. It’s fun regardless. Also idk if they had wigs back then but the idea is amusing to me. On his royal seal it portrays him with long Merovingian-reminiscent flowing locks, which is a curious style as in the reigns of his descendants it seems to go out of fashion. I do hope the bald source is true though, since it makes for an interesting character change and progression. I couldn’t find any sources that describe his hair color; I started off drawing him blonde at first, but I feel most images I’ve seen of him, even if they are later depictions like engravings tend to portray him brunette, so I just run with that so I have a consistent image in my mind.
