Historical Illustration

Various illustrations with a historical theme or interpreting historical figures. My main interests currently are 12th Century Plantagenets, Capetians, and French and Anglo-Angevin drama, but there are a couple other figures from different eras and locations as well. I enjoy combining an expressive and cartoony approach with an attention to detail inspired by medieval artwork and manuscripts of the era.

Philip I during the year of his coronation and marriage to Isabella of Hainaut. Philip also got into conflict with both his in-laws and his Queen mother Adele of Champagne, whose dower lands he confiscated during an early conflict in his reign.

This image was is inspired by an illustration that has been assumed to be a portrait of the Sultan; I wrote about my research process for this illustration, and the conclusions I came to, in my blog post “Saladin: An Illustration project and the Search for a Historical Portrait:”
